well, much is going on with our gardens this year. i have a ton of things going under lights in the basement: tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, lettuce, herbs, flowers, etc. hardening off under our new cold frame (thanks mom!) are our cabbage, brocolli, and thyme seedlings. on the porch are the window boxes, filled with runner beans, lobelia, and impatiens. in the front yard, the crocus are blooming and all sorts of other bulbs are coming up. the lilac in the back is budding.

last week i built an archway for the garden out of fallen twigs and twine. it proved to be structurally unsound. so, plan b - bamboo, twine, and chicken wire. it cost us just $15 to build! it also proved very stable (mainly due to bill’s assistance). some pictures are below. in a few months, it will hopefully be covered in morning glories, moon flowers, sweet peas, and cow peas.

we’re hoping to transplant the cabbage, brocolli, thyme, and some lettuce this weekend…as well as direct seeding peas, kale, collards, chard, spinach, lettuce, and some herbs and flowers.

the new arch way!…added some paths & coldframe (green). (straw mulch is under the blue tarp).

Not strictly garden, but food anyway. We got a couple of cases of mangoes and a case of peaches from the coop today. They’re in season, and reasonably cheap, so we’re dehydrating a bunch of the mango, and planning on freezing most of the peaches. It’ll be nice to grab a bag of peaches in the middle of winter for a cobbler or pie… if they last that long.

At the farmer’s market today too, lots of asian vegetables there this time. We got some thai eggplant and made green curry for dinner, really good. The restaurant always has those eggplant in their green curry, first time we tried them at home. Very good, easy to cook.

The garden is doing great too - the first sweet peppers are getting bigger, and we’re getting a small but steady supply of cherry tomatoes. The second round of peas is coming up nicely, and the beans are producing well - green beans in the curry tonight too.
