This past weekend we had some amazing weather for early March in Minnesota: 43 and sunny saturday, 60 and sunny Sunday. Perfect. We had to get out and do something outside.
Saturday we cleaned a bit and ran a few errands, but it didn’t warm up until later in the afternoon. In a fit of mid-winter tinkering, I’d been scheming to convert my singlespeed bike to a fixed-gear. I got a cog from a member of a bike list i’m on, and it came in the mail Saturday. I converted it quick and went for a little 20-minute ride to try it out and check for any adjustments. It was a fun ride - only a couple of instances of forgetting that i can’t coast now.
Sunday was just too nice for housework, so we packed some snacks, kids in the Burley and went for a morning ride. Autumn was riding her trusty old commuter, pulling the trailer and i rode the newly fixed bike again. A nice easy ride down Summit avenue and back, waving to lots of people walking and riding, even a couple of rollerbladers. After that, we at some lunch, packed a snack and went to Snelling State Park for a hike and picnic in the woods. We dressed the girls in fleece and rain gear, knowing they’d want to do some puddle stomping, and they indeed made full use of every puddle in sight. Fiona in particular was having a great time, only complaining when i carried her a few yards down the path so we could catch up with Ella and Autumn. Fi would have been happy to roll around in every puddle all day. Ella had a great time finding animal tracks and crunching the ice.
It’s back to the cold again this week, but it was a truly amazing weekend, enough to carry us through until spring actually gets here. Hopefully, very soon.
