”Everyone! Stop what you are doing! I have a wedgie!”

Well, now that I have your attention - Happy winter solstice, happy holidays, and a blissful beginning to the new year. We hope this letter finds you and yours in good health and spirits.

We have had a very full year - weddings, road trips, births, camping trips, getting muddy, getting clean, races, flower fairies, starting school, catching colds, the death of a beloved cat, the adoption of another, learning to read, learning to swim, learning to ice skate, cooking, baking, painting, and a wonderful new coffee shop opening across the street from our home.

Some of you may be wondering why we picked a picture of a distressed Fiona as our holiday card. Well, we thought it was a funny photo, articulating many of the realties of life with a sibling. We also thought it was the perfect image of life in Minnesota - you might love it, but when the cold arrives, it is still shocking, especially when it slides down your neck off your sister’s snowy glove.

And, of course, that sparkly lavender glove belongs to Ella Kathleen, now 4 1/2 (as she often reminds us). She is also the individual who uttered the wonderful wedgie quote used above - a favorite moment of 2005. I often wonder, as I sit and listen to her tell me the most amazing things, where my little, round, baldheaded baby went. The biggest event in Ella’s life this year was starting half-day Children’s House (or kindergarten) at J. J. Hill Montessori. She loves her class, classmates, and teachers. Each day we hear about some of the ‘works’ or activities she has done, and she always arrives home at lunch with a big smile. She has learned how to drum from a resident artist, knows how to count to 20 in French, and this week she completed the challenging 100 board on her own. Her printing continues to amaze us, and she is now reading on her own (or as she says ‘I’m reading with my MIND!’). Ella says that the other big events in her life this year are eating candy, taking the light rail to downtown Minneapolis to meet Santa and to see the 8th floor exhibit of Cinderella at the old downtown Daytons (now Marshall Fields), adopting Louis the orange and white cat, and especially the arrival of her new cousin, Samuel Michael Connell.

Fiona Eileen would probably also vote for the arrival of Sam and the addition of Louis to our family as a major events in her life. She loves babies and can already say ‘Sam’ and ‘baby cousin’ clear as a bell*. She also loves animals of all sorts, telling us dramatic stories about birds and monkeys and cats. Of course, ‘burz’ ‘mont-key’ and ‘CAT’ is about all we can make out so far. What she lacks in well-articulated vocabulary, she more than makes up for with enthusiasm. She is uttering multiple word sentences and loves to read aloud from the books around the house. Doesn’t matter what the book is, since she doesn’t know how to read, but again, the key word with Fiona is - enthusiasm! Now two, Fiona is very energetic and adventurous, collecting many more bruises and goose eggs than Ella did at this age. She loves to read aloud to herself, play with Louis, pick up Louis, carry Louis, and, more often than not, playing nicely with her big sister (especially helping Ella chase after Louis).

This year Bill and I have both spent a lot of time biking and doing some racing. We started off the year doing a duathlon together - I ran, Bill biked. We ended up winning the co-ed team group, which was quite a thrill, especially since it was the first time we’d raced together. I did a slew of triathlons again this year, including my first long course races, placing at a few of them. Bill ended the year with a series of cyclocross races (image a cross between a steeple chase and mountain biking, but on a road bike). We all had a great time cheering him on. Bill is hoping to do some more cyclocross and some long rides in 2006, and I’ll be training towards my first Half-Ironman in July (yikes!). Of course, too much of anything can be bad for you, so we’ve made up for all extra fitness by being extra lazy and eating too much in November and December.

On that note, it is probably time to go bake something, or maybe run across the street to get an egg nog latté…or both. Happy Holidays.

happy holidays! today is christmas. we are all recovering from a morning of openning gifts, playing with new toys, and reading new books. the girls had an amazing pile of goodies when the morning was over. santa, and family, were very good to them. when there is so much poverty and suffering in the world today, its humbling and a bit bewildering to think of the plenty we have.

this past monday we started off our holidat week with delivering a donation to feline rescue, the no-kill shelter we adopted both otto and louis from. they just openned a new shelter just a few blocks from home, so it was nice to see the new space and visit with many of the cats. we also have a bag of goodies for some of the foster dogs at second chance rescue which we hope to deliver this week. we would like to do more for our fellow humans at this time of year, but since we just got louis, the idea of rescue pets was fresh in our minds. plus, the girls had an easy time picking out toys and treats for the animals.

solstice

on wednesday we celebrated the winter solstice with some friends. we built a fire in the back yard to celebrate the return of the light, and ate some wonderful food. the kids had a blast being pulled around the yard on sleds by the adults. the backyard play set also got a lot of use - the slide was super fast between the slight coating of ice and the slippery snow pants.

holidazzle

on friday, we went to the holidazzle parade in downtown minneapolis. the weather was perfect for it - nearly 40 degrees out - so it was much more pleasant for the girls, since we had to stand around for 45 minutes before the parade started and then another 30 minutes for the parade itself. we were lucky to get there so early, since the sidewalks were soon packed with people. we forgot to bring the camera, but there are some pictures posted on wcco.com.

yesterday, christmas eve, we went out to visit uncle mike, aunt karen, and new baby cousin sam. we had a great visit. i had a lot of fun shopping for baby sam, since we needed a present for him! he wasn’t expected until after christmas, so it was nice shopping for him now that he is here. again, we forgot the camera, but we will be seeing them again and will take more pictures.

mess

so, now the presents have all been openned, and we are all having some quiet time. tonight, we will make another fire and count our blessings. tomorrow, my parents come down from duluth and we’ll have a gathering at peter & molly’s house.

happy holidays everyone. peace be with us all.

We’re thrilled to help introduce our new nephew Samuel Michael:

Click for lots more pix!

Congratulations, Mike & Karen!

First nephew for us, first boy cousin for the girls. We visited Sunday, and both girls did a great job holding the baby, taking about 3 turns each. Luckily, he was out cold, sleeping the whole time, so he was very tolerant of all the moving around and new hands holding him. Very cute, of course, brown hair with a bit of auburn to it.

yesterday we brought home a new kitten. well, he’s a young cat/older kitten. we adopted him through feline rescue, a no-kill rescue shelter, and the same shelter where we got otto, our other cat. we had planned on getting a female, but the only female cat they had at the age we wanted (6-12 months - old enough to have had most of their shots, already altered, etc) was one named wendy who was VERY bonded to her brother and mom, who were all at the same foster home. even though i know they will probably be split up at some point, i couldn’t be the one to do it, especially since those two kittens were still nursing. the handsome kitty we brought home had a sister and mama at the same shelter, but was already more independent and outgoing. bill wasn’t sure about getting another cat, but when ‘drew’ (litter name) started licking his hand and purring, i knew it was all over. there was one other kitten who was very sweet, named loli, but he was a black cat, like frida, and i didn’t think i was ready to see another black cat in our house just yet.

anyway, here he is! if anyone has name ideas, feel free to post them. we’re thinking we’d like something that is a bit princely, since he has a regal quality to him. personally, i love the name rufus, which means ‘red-headed’ but he’s just NOT a rufus. maybe fergus, which was one of my favorite boy names when we were pregnant with ella (and this might be the only red-headed boy i get!). diego - after diego rivera, since our former cat was frida after frida khalo. ‘weasley’ and ‘percy’ are in the running (having just seen harry potter 4 yet again), as is ‘ludo’ (then we’d have otto and ludo (bagman)). searched the encyclopedia of arda (LoR), but most of the names are either too hobbity for him, or too hard to pronounce.

update: he’s now Louis (pron. looey), or more properly, Snow Louis Sun King. Now that he’s Louis, how could he have been anything else? - Bill

we spent our thanksgiving up in duluth. since we didn’t have family in duluth growing up, we would get together with other families in similar situations, rotating host families each year. it grew into quite a tradition. my parents only have thanksgiving at their house once in a blue moon. we missed the last time, so we were happy to have a thanksgiving at thier home this year. the girls had a great time playing with all the dress up clothes and toys, going for hikes in the snow, visiting grandma kathy’s friend with all the birds, and getting sweets from hepzibah’s sweete shoppe.
