Let us have a moment of silence for all Americans who are now stuck in traffic on their way to a health club to ride a stationary bicycle. - Congressman Earl Blumenauer (Oregon)

We had our first camping trip of the year this past weekend, and it went very well (after some fighting friday traffic on the way there).

We went to Afton, one of our favorite parks, and close-by too. Great weather (a little chilly Friday night), lots of hiking and resting. Ella had a great time running around in the grass, and she even carried a little backpack (from the back of the baby backpack we carry her in) for awhile. Very cute, although we didn’t bring the camera with us this time - sorry, no pictures :(

Saturday night, after much hiking, Greta was sacked, too tired to move. She made a really lame woof when some kids playing capture the flag in the field came nearby, but she didn’t even move. She followed Autumn for about 20 feet when Autumn went for a water refill, then pooped out. Ella was being really funny, she went over to Greta, and held the leash and taking Greta for a walk back to the picnic table. I think Greta was too tired to do care, certainly too tired to move any faster than Ella was.

It looked like rain this morning, so we headed out after breakfast. It was gorgeous when we got home, so I washed the car and Autumn did a little garden tending, then i planted the potatoes that came last week - my contribution to the garden effort.

A very busy weekend for us - most of saturday biking to the Living Green Expo. Our first bike ride of the year, and first trip with the burley for the year. Ella had a great time riding around, we had a picnic and lots of running around in the grass. She fell asleep on the way home (late for her nap too).

Sunday was all outside work. Autumn got some more seeds planted and the front flower beds cleaned up and mulched. I think she has everything in that can go in before the last frost date. Last weekend, I had cleaned up the picket fence that we removed from the side, and this weekend i installed it in the back, just off of the driveway. I also built a new gate - it opens both ways!

Here’s a quick drawing of the new layout:

Last night, Ella was giving the new baby lots of love through mama’s belly.

She would hug Autumn’s belly and talk to the baby through the belly button:

“Hello! how are you?” “Baby in mama’s tummy” and kissing the belly.

only 6 months to go!

well, much is going on with our gardens this year. i have a ton of things going under lights in the basement: tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, lettuce, herbs, flowers, etc. hardening off under our new cold frame (thanks mom!) are our cabbage, brocolli, and thyme seedlings. on the porch are the window boxes, filled with runner beans, lobelia, and impatiens. in the front yard, the crocus are blooming and all sorts of other bulbs are coming up. the lilac in the back is budding.

last week i built an archway for the garden out of fallen twigs and twine. it proved to be structurally unsound. so, plan b - bamboo, twine, and chicken wire. it cost us just $15 to build! it also proved very stable (mainly due to bill’s assistance). some pictures are below. in a few months, it will hopefully be covered in morning glories, moon flowers, sweet peas, and cow peas.

we’re hoping to transplant the cabbage, brocolli, thyme, and some lettuce this weekend…as well as direct seeding peas, kale, collards, chard, spinach, lettuce, and some herbs and flowers.

the new arch way!…added some paths & coldframe (green). (straw mulch is under the blue tarp).
