There is scarcely anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse, and sell a little more cheaply. The person who buys on price alone is this man's lawful prey. - John Ruskin -

bleah. it’s a summer head cold, or hay fever gone bad, or something like that. waiting for the nyquil to kick in…

Ella’s latest cute thing: she’ll dance around in circles. She’ll start dancing when you ask her, ‘can you dance?’, but now she’ll go around in circles, several at a time. I think she’s made herself dizzy doing it too. Super funny.

She’s getting more communicative all the time - she’s really excited about rain, and uses the sign for rain whenever she can. Tonight, when we were getting ready for bed, we said “it’s time to change your diaper”, and she patted me; she wanted me to go do it :)

interesting article from scientists studying this stuff:

Can Global Warming Trigger a ‘Little ice Age’ from The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

I didn’t think about that picture of Washington crossing the Delaware before. Much more than scaring me, this article makes me think that a global temperature dip would be a temporary, non-catastrophic thing. Not that it would be fun; presumably we’d have food shortages in many parts of the world, for example. On the other hand, it could be a great kick in the ass to get people to conserve and actually start caring about energy use and efficiency (while we’re wearing our down parkas in June…).

We’re going to see The St. Paul Saints play tonight, and bonus: they’re playing the Duluth/Superior Dukes, so Autumn won’t know who to root for.

Tonight’s promotion is “Win Bill Murray’s Money”, no idea what that’s going to be. Will he be at the park? oooh, that’d be cool.

Ella is 15 months old today! Lots of 15 month notes and some new pix at the myfamily site. She’s also getting some canines in, so some teething stuff going on. She’s also getting really talkative, pointing and telling us about everything while we were shopping at the coop tonight. whatta kid!

Sore muscles, but a nice weekend of camping at Frontenac. Best hike: trail about 100′ or so above the river. Beautiful old growth, lots of interesting fungi and moss and whatnot growing out of downed trees. Amazing clouds of blue drangonflies in every patch of sun along the trail. The worst part was the 400′ descent to the trail from the ridge, and then back up 400′ at the end of the trail to head back, all carrying Ella. The new baby pack worked great, but it was still about 40lbs more than i’d rather carry on such a trail. Ella really loved seeing everything though, she had a great time.

Old Frontenac was very cool too, an old town that you’d miss if you didn’t know to look for it. It’s small, but mainly it’s tucked away in a woods. The streets are narrow gravel, and the yards look carved out of the woods, rather than a flat space with a few trees added. It’s really like driving through the woods and seeing a few scattered houses than seeing a town. Very cool. There was one gorgeous huge estate, big house, dry stone wall around the perimeter, but it still looked surrounded like it was built into nature rather than instead of it.
